Celebrating the Harvest Season with the Thirteen Strings
(and a surprise connection to the Governor-General)*

“Oboefest” opens the Thirteen Strings’ concert season on Friday, October 12 at Dominion-Chalmers Church (355 Cooper St., Ottawa) at 7:30 pm. Guest soloist Anna Peterson performs the Alessandro Marcello Oboe Concerto in D minor, S D935. Julie Payette, Canada's 29th Governor General, has used the opening to the second movement of Alessandro Marcello's Oboe Concerto in D Minor on her Coat of Arms.* The chosen melody symbolizes her passion and love for music, especially from the Baroque period.

Drawn to the oboe at the age of nine because it was “different”, Wisconsin-born Peterson is also a certified yoga teacher whose practice extends beyond the music room onto the mat to strike the perfect balance on stage.

Canadian composer and 2018 Best Composer Juno Award Winner, Jocelyn Morlock, Vivaldi, and Tchaikovsky complete the concert repertoire with guest violinist Manuela Milani participating in the latter works. Milani has been a member of the National Arts Centre Orchestra since 1998 and concertmaster of the Thirteen Strings since 2004. She plays a 1785 J & A Gagliano violin on loan to her from the Zukerman Musical Instruments Foundation for the NAC Orchestra.

Concert tickets for “Oboefest” on October 12 are available at Leading Note, Books on Beechwood, Compact Music and at www.thirteenstrings.ca. September 28th is the deadline for getting a free ticket with a full subscription to the 6-concert series (October, 2018 to June, 2019). For more information email info@thirteenstrings.ca
A note to the curious: “Per Aspera ad Astra” means “Through Hardship to the Stars” an apt phrase for Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette
