Youth Art Symposium at the Ottawa Art Gallery

The Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG) presents YAS! Youth Art Symposium, a three-day event happening in Ottawa from Friday, November 10, to Sunday, November 12, 2017. The symposium is the first of its kind to be organised in Ontario. OAG partnered with 4 public galleries from across the province to produce the event: the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Museum London (London, ON), Workers Arts & Heritage Centre (Hamilton), and Thunder Bay Art Gallery, as well as the University of Ottawa’s Department of Visual Arts.

“OAG is in an exciting phase of expansion; not only are we soon to open our new building full of innovative programming, we are also embracing the evolving challenges and opportunities of being a 21st century museum. Who better to help shape our new reality but the youth of our time? Young people are not the future, youth are here and now, not just as audience to our programs and exhibitions but as cultural contributors as well.”
- Alexandra Badzak, Ottawa Art Gallery Director and Chief Executive Officer

"As a member of Départ, the Ottawa Art Gallery's Youth Council, I can say that we are very excited for the Youth Art Symposium (YAS!). We've worked really hard since the beginning of the year to plan a fun, unique, and unforgettable conference and party that will really give a chance for youth across Ontario to voice their opinion on art institutions."
- Candide Uyanze, Ottawa Art Gallery Youth Council Member and YAS! planning consultant

The symposium was designed for youth by youth, and is intended to provide a platform for young people to lead the conversation on how to make art more accessible to youth, and to define for themselves what they need and want from their museums and galleries. The symposium program will include youth-led discussion groups, youth council presentations, artist workshops, and a keynote speech by 18 year-old award-winning director and cinematographer Morgana McKenzie. The symposium will also include a screening of short films co-presented by SAW Video, as well as a free all ages art party co-presented by the NAC, with live DJs, interactive art stations, and creative interventions by the symposium’s artist in residence Naomi Tessler.

YAS! is made possible by funding from the Ontario150 Partnership grant program. The OAG’s youth council Départ is supported by TD.
