For this new series, I chose to change my work method and let the elements take form without a precise idea of the end result. The paintings were constructed over time and formal choices were often decided on a day-to-day basis.
The German term “Gestalt” can be translated as “form” in the sense of “to take form” or “to construct”. Also used in psychology, it refers to, amongst other things, the theory of “Here and Now”. These last words were written in Latin on the floor of my studio during my artist residency in Leipzig.
Although my approach has changed, there are links with my earlier work. The exploration of the illusion of gesture, the idea that things aren’t always as they seem at first glance and the interaction of different planes on a two dimensional surface are some of my preoccupations.
I would like to thank the Ontario Arts Council for Its support.
