Nina Cherney, NEW WORKS

March 23 - April 5, 2017

Thursday, March 23, 2017 5 - 8 pm

Galerie St-Laurent + Hill is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Montréal artist Nina Cherney.

Exuberance has defined Nina Cherney's practice and it emanates in her most recent body of work. Cherney focuses on the iconic subject in the history of Canadian painting- the tree and the landscape, situating herself in this rich tradition by honing in close to home. Far from primal nordic forests, endless horizons and threatening skies, the artist draws from her own experience, capturing a sense of the land as she walks it- the gently rolling hills, treed vistas and lakes of the Laurentian foothills. Her paintings capture and celebrate "moments in time,” paying tribute to the joy she finds in nature and as such she creates a juxtaposition for us during the chaos of our urban lives.

Nina's methodology is intuitive. Her art is in play with an expressive personal idiom. Her paintings are marked by an equally paced and considered craftsmanship. When considering her use of paint, there is a sense of joyful dynamism, spontaneity, and a complex underpinning of composition and colour application. Nina paints in layers: from afar the works bear a dynamic poise, and close up the grid-like interplay of colour and movement suggest another structure, a tapestry-like surface.
From the beginning of Nina's journey, colour has been her forte. The wielding harmonies work up and down the colour wheel. From primary to secondary to tertiary hues, the paint creates a keenly wrought surface. Her dynamic energetic marks generate vibrant layers enlivened with saturated colours like yellows, cobalt blues, and cadmium reds that let our eyes moves through subtle and restful passages of blue gray or olive green.

As a painter, Cherney's interest in depicting the land is coupled with her concern to resolve the picture plane as an abstract surface, deftly negotiating the boundary between abstraction and realism. These painted landscapes in this exhibition are unequivocally resonating with a mesmerizing intimacy with the rows of clustered autumnal trees, brilliant foliage, rolling hillsides, and reflecting waters. We can sense the artist's deeply felt experience of a known and personal environment, and her sheer excitement in the act of painting. Nina Cherney is a graduate of Concordia University, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing. She has had several exhibitions in Quebec and Ontario and her works can be found in many private collections.
