The Ottawa School of Art (OSA) will showcase artist David W Henderson’s new collection of abstract paintings, The four seasons of life, from March 23 to April 2, 2017. The exhibit will take place at the Ottawa School of Art Gallery of the Downtown Campus, ByWard Market. The vernissage will take place on Sunday, March 26, from 1pm to 4pm. The artist will also be present in the gallery on Sunday, April 2, from 1pm to 4pm. All are welcome!
David Henderson studied acrylic painting intensively with Robert Hinchley, an OSA instructor, between 2004 and 2008 with a small group of dedicated students. They were introduced to the many styles of painters and painting. Early on, he set in earnest to develop his unique style. David and his wife have been longtime supporters of the OSA. They established the David and Nicole Henderson scholarship for diploma students at the Ottawa School of Art in 2006 that continues to support OSA Diploma students annually to this day.
The abstract paintings in The Four Seasons of Life exhibit are both a continuum of David’s work, and a step forward from his previous Experiments in Light. His new work retains the luminous qualities which are his trademark but is now imbued with more strength because of its high degree of texture. David found his inspiration and direction from Vivaldi’s music and nature theme. His first works in this series are in the Fall colours. This season has come to mean for him walks in the woods, kids jumping in the leaves, progress and joy in his personal life and career. His Winter paintings evolved from the darkness of the short days, brilliance of the sun and imply movement and the vivid colours of carnivals. The slow unfolding of Spring in the Vancouver of his youth from its winter darkness and fog into cherry blossoms meant that in the end everything was possible. For him, Summer is a time of disconnect and renewal to face the real world again. In essence, the four seasons reflect the nature of life.
David had a solo exhibit, Experiments in Light, at the Visual Arts Centre, Orleans in 2008. Between 2003-2009, he also exhibited regularly at the Visual Arts Centre; the Orleans Library; the North Gloucester Library; Gloucester Gallery; the Ottawa Little Theatre, and the Ottawa School of Art Boutique and ByWard Gallery. He has numerous paintings in collections in Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes, California, Minnesota and France.
