collective (gulp) dance projects celebrates its fifth year with a low-budget/high-risk venture: a studio performance of three new works by Caroline Barrière, Megan Jerome, Pixie Cram and collective (gulp).
Starting with a blank slate, the collaborating artists had one key task: to do something new, or something old in a new way, to allow and acknowledge influences, changes of direction and growth. square zero three brings you strange pairings and leaps of faith. Tin foil stars, fast moving water, accordions and armchairs. Shadows, songs and an overhead projector.
square zero was started by collective (gulp) dance projects as an evolving platform for presenting unusual, innovative, interdisciplinary dance. The first square zero independent dance festival (2004) presented over 25 artists from across Canada and the United States in streets, parks, galleries and studios. In 2005, square zero: the second edition brought together twelve artists from Canada and Europe for a week-long residency and performance developed around a common theme of "documentation".
This latest version of square zero focuses on Ottawa-based artists and is designed to support creative exchange between different disciplines (music, film, dance, video). The participating artists have been engaged in an ongoing dialogue about the continuum between creation and performance, the relationship between the audience and the artist and how to push your creative mind in new directions. This rich process will be revealed on May 29, 30 and 31st in an informal, intimate showing of new works.
