Doug Smarch describes his work as conceptual, made for a tribe he invented and open to various interpretations viewers bring to an object that looks ‘authentically native.’ In fact the feather robe is a homeage to the repetitious labour of cleaning, since it is made out of feather dusters. Smarch’s stories evolve both from making the work and talking about it. He is of Tlingit origin and from the village of Teslin. He is a recent graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute.
