Victor, on the heels of Marcel Duchamp, aluminium, 1996 | ||
This project
takes its shape from the stoppages étalon created by Marcel
Duchamp by dropping a meter long string before tracing it on a piece of
wood. Repeated three times, the experience produced a new yardstick protected
form the prevarications of chance. The three curves reproduced here were
obtained by a careful compilation of the number of times that the names
of Otto Dix (1891-1969), Kees Van Dongen (1877-1968) and Marcel Duchamp
(1887-1968) appear respectively in the Art Index (a repertory of periodicals
on art) between the years 1930 and 1993. The curves cast a light on the
fluctuations of the artists's critical successes during that period. |
